When I tested it with a multimeter, the voltages were way out of spec, although I can't say that didn't happen after the incident.posted by alexei at 9:35 AM on January As far as your concern with leaving your computer on that's not something you need to worry about.posted by zephyr_words at 10:20 AM on January 25, 2011 I've done something similar dig this

How should I deal with the cut wires so they don't cause any problems of their own? (Not that competant with dealing with electricity, just computers). Would cutting the power wire further comprimize the integrity of my power supply, and if not, what would be the best way to cut it (I assume at the junction with I'm pretty sure the only thing the operator ever heard me say was something unprintable. Plan on taking it back to Microcenter (at least as much as I can pry out) tomorrow. I guarantee you'll get a suitable response and replacement from WD. With how cheap storage is, I prefer using laptop hdds now that only need to connect to usb for power. this content Now I wonder if that is still a good idea. It seems more likely a bad ps could cause that rather than a hd. It's Glocks I hate.
I'm happy to report that Microcenter (based on one phone call) genuinely seems concerned, store manager asked me to bring the remains of the box in so they can have a Good thing there wasn't actual fire; we'd have had to clear the building, and it was embarrassing enough as it was. Doesn't say much for their CS, does it? weblink All posts copyright their original authors.
On closer inspection of the sides and surrounding damage, it's clear that the fire started in that bottom bay, which at the time only held the new HGST drive. At some point enough resistance built up in the joint to create enough heat to melt the solder and blacken the wiring close by. So, anybody else ever have a hard drive catch fire?
